Abstract:

We daily hear of new software issues:

·        Inadequate software testing costs the economy $60 Billion a year – NIST Study – May 2002

·        40% or more of an IT project budget is spent on avoidable rework – IEEE Research

·        Costs from failed IT projects with the U.S. for the year 2000 were estimated at $84 billion dollars – Boston Globe.

The objective of this presentation is to introduce best practices for improving software development processes to begin to reduce the issues in software development.  The presentation will focus on several best practices for software process improvement including executive sponsorship, a process improvement organization, key metrics, a framework for developing processes in expert mode, implementation plan and process improvement model. Audience participation and discussion will be included. The presentation is intended to give a starting point for beginning the software process improvement journey

Bio:

Dick Hedger leads his own consulting firm, Quality Software Technologies, assisting companies in developing core competencies in software development processes. He possesses over 40 years of broad software development, software project management, quality management, and consulting experience. He spent 31 years at IBM Rochester in the management of software development projects. He is an Adjunct Professor in the University of Minnesota Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the Master of Science in Software Engineering program. He is a member of the IEEE, ACM, ASQ, TwinSPIN and the SEI.
