Configuration Management (CM) is a vital component that supports the production of quality systems. Yet so many organizations do not give CM the importance it deserves. With the advent of open systems and the Internet, CM has been stretched to encompass more platforms and components than ever before. There are many aspects to CM that need to be considered; component management, version management, dependency management as well as back-up and restore procedures. Some of these issues can be handled using a configuration management tool and others must still be handled via manual processes.
We have three presenters that will address this topic. Dave Levitt will present information on the various aspects of CM as well as touch on the political side of CM. James Butenhoff and Jackie Tenney will present information about several of the tools on the market that support CM - their capabilities as well as strengths and weaknesses. They will share information about some of the ?shareware? CM tools available as well as lessons they?ve learned in implementing and administering CM tools.
Dave Levitt is a technologist and project manager for PJC. He has defined the Configuration Management policy for PJC's Object-Oriented Forte development environment.
James Butenhoff and Jackie Tenney are both Principal Consultants with ATI. James has extensive development experience in multi-tiered, client/server environments. He has had responsibility for the installation, configuration and integration of CM tools such as PVCS. Jackie has 10+ years experience with client/server environments in roles such as project manager and technical lead. She was the Lead for Honeywell?s proprietary CM tool called CAPS - Computer Aided Parts System.
